Building a truly ecological lodge
La Canasta is one of the only earth bag buildings in Central America.
Built using clay and sand from nearby packed into old rice sacks we have a building that keeps cool and stands firm without costing the earth.

Keeping it local
Throughout the build we have used local workers; paying a liveable wage and providing training in traditional and new skills along the way.
A few eyebrows were raised when we started with the sacks but their hard work has produced a beautiful building.
Nearly all the materials came from within a few 100 yards and when they didn't we used recycled and low carbon options including eco paint.

Why?
We believe that the key to preserving the future of Honduras’s beautiful natural resources is by celebrating them and encouraging people from across the country and the world to come and experience them. With increasing deforestation and urbanisation we wanted to demonstrate that local people can make a difference and that this can be truly sustainable. So, we set out to build a home with the smallest carbon footprint possible. A building that makes best use of the natural materials on our doorstop and a place that gives visitors a real sense of the community they are visiting. Most of all, we want you to have an amazing stay with us.
