Things to do

Things to do:

La Canasta is a great place to base an adventure or sit back and relax. Whatever you want from your visit to Honduras, we thought you might like a few ideas to get you started.

Pico Bonito National Park

Picture
Pico Bonito is the second largest national park in the country, covering an area of 1073 square kilometers. Its vast size subsequently means that it's one of the most diverse national parks in Honduras. It is famous for the largest peak of the Nombre de Dios mountain range; Pico Bonito itself is 2436 meters high. However the peak is a challenge to climb and few people attempt it as climbing equipment is required and the climb can take up to 10 days. Visitors to the park will find it easier to explore the lower lying regions around the Zacate and Cangrejal Rivers. Pico Bonito is home to jaguars, armadillos, wild pigs, tepescuintes, squirrels, monkeys, toucans, white tailed deer, mountain lions, river otters, motmots and many more species. There are numerous trails to be hiked and swimming holes to cool off in.

Rafting, kayaking, Zip Wires and more...

There are a number of local tour companies that offer a range of exciting adventure experiences including rafting and kayaking on the nearby rapids; tree top zip wire, hiking and mountain biking.

The main companies in the area are Omega Tours and Jungle River. Both have websites if you want to find out more.

Guaruma

A local NGO that trains young people as guides offers hiking tours and trails in the nearby villages.

Tours include a hike to the village of La Muralla which stops off at a swimming hole on the way.

Mountain bikes can be hired and information about local wildlife is available.

The Bay Islands

With some of the best and cheapest diving on the world's second largest reef the Islands of Utila, Roatan and Guanaja offer a touch of the Caribbean Honduran style.
Snorklers and divers can see diverse fish, whale sharks and turtles while the white sand beaches and delicious food give your visit a truly luxurious feel.

Cuero y Salado National Park

Take a boat through the calm waters and
knotty mangroves of this national park and you can spot a wide range of wildlife including howler monkeys, crocodiles, turtles, birds and if you are lucky, the elusive and endangered manatee ('sea cow').
